φοίνιξ, ῑκος, ὁ (s. nom. pr.), 1) der Purpur, die Purpurfarbe, weil die Erfindung und der früheste Gebrauch des Purpurs den Phöniciern zugeschrieben wurde; Il. 4, 141. 6, 219 Od. 23, 201 u. sonst; übh. die Röthe, τὸν ὑπὸ βλεφάροις φοίνικα Eur. Phoen. 1495. – 2) die Palme, der Palmbaum; Od. 6, 163; h. Apoll. 117; φοίνικος ἔρνος Pind. frg. 45; Eur. Hec. 458 I. T. 1099. Man unterscheidet die männliche und die weibliche Palme, ὁ φοίνιξ ἔρσην u. ἡ φοίνιξ βαλανηφόρος, Her. 1, 193; doch steht auch für letztere oft ὁ φοίνιξ, vgl. 4, 172. 182. 183, Xen. An. 2, 3,14 ff. – Auch die Palmfrucht, die Dattel, bes. Sp. – 3) ein von den Phöniciern erfundenes musikalisches Instrument, Her. 4, 192, Ath. 637 b, auch φοινίκιον. – 4) der ägyptische Wundervogel Phönix, Hes. frg. 50, 4, Her. 2, 73. – 5) eine Grasart, auch ῥοῦς u. ἀγχίνωψ genannt, Diosc. – 6) als adj., purpurroth; bei Hom. Il. 23, 454 von der Farbe eines röthlich braunen Pferdes; von der Farbe des Feuers, φοίνιξ πυρὸς πνοά Eur. Troad. 832; dazu das bes. fem. φοίνισσα, s. unten. – [Ι ist in den dreisylbigen Casus immer lang, im Nominativ aber betrachteten manche Grammatiker diese Länge nur als Positionslänge und accentuirten deshalb φοῖνιξ, s. Schäf. Hes. O. 69 und zu Soph. Phil. 562.]
